Blackmagic Camera ProDock - Dockingstation für iPhone 17 Profi-Filmer

[15:15 Thu,11.September 2025   by Thomas Richter]

With the new Blackmagic Camera ProDock, Blackmagic Design is launching a professional docking solution for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max (www.slashcam.de/news/single/iPhone-17-Pro--ProRes-RAW--Genlock--Apple-Log-2-un-19515.html). The docking station is specifically aimed at filmmakers and expands the smartphone with numerous video connections that were previously reserved for external camera systems. In conjunction with the Blackmagic Camera App (www.slashcam.de/news/single/Blackmagic-Camera-App-3-0-fuer-Android-und-iOS-brin-19519.html), the iPhone transforms into a production camera with professional features such as external timecode, genlock, audio, recording to SSDs, ProRes RAW, and more.

Interfaces for Professional Use

The Camera ProDock equips iPhones with a wide range of connections, including:
- Full-size HDMI output for external monitoring
- Three USB-C ports for high-speed SSDs and accessories
- 3.5mm stereo input for an external camera microphone or wireless microphone
- 3.5mm stereo output for audio monitoring with headphones
- BNC connectors for genlock and timecode
- Power supply for iPhone and connected accessories via USB-C
- Lockable 12V DC socket for powering ProDock, iPhone, and all USB-C devices

Genlock and Timecode for Multicamera Workflows

A central aspect of the ProDock is the support for external genlock and timecode via BNC connections for professional multicamera workflows:
- Genlock synchronizes the image capture of multiple cameras at the single-frame level, preventing image offset or flickering – particularly relevant for recordings in front of LED walls or in virtual productions.
- Timecode allows for the synchronous starting and stopping of recordings across multiple devices. In post-production – for example, with DaVinci Resolve – this greatly simplifies the automatic synchronization of clips.

These features make the iPhone, in combination with the ProDock, suitable for setups that were previously reserved exclusively for classic digital film cameras.

Recording in ProRes and ProRes RAW Directly to SSD

In conjunction with the Blackmagic Camera App, the dock supports recording to external storage media. Through the USB-C connection of external SSDs, large amounts of data can be stored directly on fast storage media – a significant improvement given the limited internal iPhone capacity. Optionally, the data can be stored in Apple ProRes up to 4K as well as ProRes RAW, also up to 4K resolution, directly in Blackmagic Cloud, enabling real-time collaboration worldwide.

Power Supply and Compatibility

The integrated power management not only supplies the iPhone but also connected accessories simultaneously. This enables the construction of a consistently wired, powered rig – an important aspect for longer shoots or stationary deployments. Compatibility with industry-standard accessories was also taken into account during the design.

User Interface

Despite the complex technical possibilities, the operation remains simple: The camera app uses the proven user interface of Blackmagic Design, known from devices such as the URSA Mini Pro or the Pocket Cinema Camera. Frame rate, ISO, shutter angle, or white balance can be set directly on the iPhone with just a few gestures.
