Blackmagic PYXIS 6K: The Full Frame Box-Camera

[03:40 Sat,13.April 2024   by Rob]

Long awaited by many and now here: With the Pyxis 6K, Blackmagic presents three more powerful full-frame versions of its Cinema Camera 6K, which has been integrated into a classic compact cine housing and offers a maximum of rigging options thanks to completely new sideplate modules.

In addition, new viewfinder, battery and more professional in/out options are available at a price starting at 3,245 euros.

Sideplates

With the Pyxis, Blackmagic presents a digital full-frame camera which, according to Blackmagic, is the most versatile riggable full-frame digital film camera in the world. Responsible for this are new "side plates" consisting of the standard plate, the SSD plate and the rosette plate.

Depending on the application, the Blackmagic Pyxis can be rigged in very different ways: The standard side plate has two 1/4-inch threaded holes and one 3/8-inch threaded hole for attaching microphones, mounts and other accessories. With the SSD side plate, USB-C drives for external recordings or even a cell phone for live streaming can be conveniently and securely attached. The optional rosette plate is designed for maximum flexibility and has five 1/4-inch and four 3/8-inch threaded holes for accessories as well as a rosette attachment point for a handle or extension arm.

In our eyes, a pretty clever customization option that we plan to take a closer look at at NAB soon ...

Fullframe 6K Sensor

The full-frame sensor of the new Blackmagic Pyxis is very similar to that of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K - here is our practical test with anamorphic lenses. The Pyxis full-frame sensor also has a native resolution of 6048 x 4032 pixels, an internal optical low-pass filter, dual native ISO and 13 f-stops of dynamic range.

The same resolutions and frame rates as the Ciname Cmaera 6K are also available for the recording formats - and therefore also a wide range of formats designed for recording on S35 and full-frame anamorphic lenses.

The Blackmagic Pyxis records up to 36 fps with 6048 x 4032 pixels in 3:2 with Open Gate (full sensor area) or 60 fps with 6048 x 2520 in 2.4:1 and 60 fps with 4096 x 2160 in 4K DCI.

Higher frame rates of up to 100 fps can be recorded with a cropped sensor at 2112 x 1184 in Super 16.

With full-frame anamorphic sensors, 4.8K recordings with 4832 x 4032 at 24 fps can be filmed in the anamorphic 6:5 ratio and with S35 anamorphic sensors in the 4:3 ratio with 4096 x 3072.

Recording is done exclusively in Blackmagic RAW formats with different quality levels on dual CFexpress cards (only proxy recording is done in H.264)

new EVF, professional In/Outs.

Together with its new flagship camera URSA Cine 12K, Blackmagic has also introduced an exciting new OLED EVF, which relies on USB-C as a combined video and power supply and is therefore quite clean.

Cineviewfinder4

The new Blackmagic URSA Cine EVF has a built-in proximity sensor and glass diopter with four elements for appropriate focusing for a wide range of visual acuities and various eyecups.

The new URSA Cine EVF is mounted on rods, has 6 function buttons and costs €1,969 as an optional accessory. We are really looking forward to taking a closer look at the new viewfinder at NAB. For us, this is currently the most exciting new "small" accessory launch.

In addition to operating the new Cine EVF on the front-mounted USB-C viewfinder port of the Blackmagic Pyxis, two SDI ports (1x 12G SDI Out, 1x REF in / Timecode In) and Ethernet (1 x 1Gb/s) are now also available thanks to the larger housing.

There is also 1 x mini XLR analog audio in, 1 x 3.5mm stereo input and 1 x 3.5mm headphone out, and Bluetooth is also integrated.

Above all, the 12G SDI Out, the new Viewfinder, the Ethernet port and Bluetooth for remote operation significantly expand the application options of the Blackmagic Pyxis.

A 4-inch HDR touchscreen is available on the left-hand side of the Pyxis, around which there is a series of functions assigned to external switches that are primarily used for menu navigation. According to Backmagic, the HD monitor can also be used as a 1st AC monitor for focus pulls. Individual shortcuts can be stored on three function buttons.

The Blackmagic Pyxis uses Sony BP-U rechargeable batteries. Blackmagic promises over 3 hours of non-stop operation with the highest battery capacity (which should be the BP-U100 with 100 Wh). If you are using V-mounts, you should invest in a corresponding plug-in adapter, of which there are a whole range of third-party manufacturers on the market.

Finally, it should be mentioned that Blackmagic also includes a complete version of its DaVinci Resolve Studio software free of charge with the Pyxis.
