Now it gets interesting: Blackmagic brings its own RAW format, which is supposed to rely on a new processing of the sensor data. Therefore a codec was developed, which should offer the same quality, bit depth, control and the same dynamic range as conventional RAW data, but produces smaller amounts of data. Blackmagic sees the new method as a "replacement for both RAW and video codecs". ;) Using a new algorithm, part of the demosaicing process is transferred from the computer&s CPU to the camera itself. The partially demosaiced images are encoded together with the specific image sensor properties and stored in a Blackmagic RAW file. Thus, complete control over attributes such as ISO, white balance, exposure, contrast, saturation and more is maintained. Blackmagic RAW uses a new Blackmagic Design Generation 4 Color Science. The images are encoded using a custom 12-bit nonlinear color space, which Blackmagic says is designed for maximum color data and the widest possible dynamic range.
;) BRAW offers two encoding methods, one at constant quality, the other at constant bit rate. Blackmagic RAW Q0 or 3:1 offers "camera-anative" quality for the highest demands, Blackmagic RAW Q5 and 5:1 deliver "extremely high quality", while the compression settings at 8:1 and 12:1 are designed for fast workflows. . By the way, the clips are saved as files and not as image sequences. The codec is highly optimized for AVX, AVX2 and SSE4.1 capable processors, can utilize multiple cores and works across multi-core CPUs. Blackmagic RAW is also GPU-accelerated and works with Apple Metal, CUDA and OpenCL. Extensive metadata support is part of the concept -- the metadata is written directly into the BRAW file, and you can also use subfiles (.sidecar) that contain fully editable and visually readable JSON-formatted metadata. With the already available Blackmagic Camera 6.0 Beta Update, the URSA Mini Pro offers full Blackmagic RAW functionality. A Blackmagic RAW player is supposed to make the viewing of the video files uncomplicated and of course the DaVinci Resolve 15.1 update also supports the format. As Blackmagic emphasizes, BRAW is provided cross-platform and free of charge. A fully documented developer SDK (for Mac, Windows and Linux) allows other manufacturers to extend their software with support for Blackmagic RAW using embedded sensor profile metadata and Blackmagic Design Color Science.
