Blackmagic introduces URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF for virtual sets

[17:51 Sun,16.April 2023   by blip]

Virtual productions are on the rise. Specifically for shooting in front of LED walls, Blackmagic is now equipping its URSA Mini Pro 12K with a high-performance optical low-pass filter (OLPF) that optimizes the 12K Super35 sensor. The OLPF is said to reduce annoying artifacts such as moiré effects and aliasing while preserving colors and important image details. Aside from the filter, the new model has the same features as the previously available 12K Ursa Mini Pro.

Due to the high LED matrix frequencies of video walls, problems can arise when filming in virtual production environments using ultra-sharp lenses and high-resolution sensors - distracting interference patterns can occur. Using an optical low-pass filter minimizes interference, reducing moiré and aliasing effects.

The URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF's optical low-pass filter is precisely matched to its 12K sensor and also delivers updated infrared filtering for improved far-red conversion. Blackmagic is also targeting the camera at shooting scenarios involving green screen and VFX, as well as live action compositing and CGI.

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K models feature a sensor with a native resolution of 12288 x 6480 pixels, resulting in 80 megapixels per frame. The Super35 sensor brings a dynamic range of 14 stops and a native sensitivity of 800 ISO. It has an equal number of red, green and blue pixels and is optimized for images in different resolutions - in 12K you can shoot at 60 fps, in 8K or 4K RAW even up to 120 fps is possible with the help of internal sensor scaling without cropping or changing the field of view. With the URSA Mini Pros' interchangeable mount, you can also choose from a wide range of classic and modern cine lenses.

To enable trouble-free 12Bit RAW workflows in 12K, Blackmagic RAW, an efficient next-generation codec, was also developed in parallel with the sensor. This allows you to shoot in 12K and still post-process the footage on a laptop.
