The American budget camera specialist Camp Snap has introduced its first video camera with the CS-8 - a deliberately simple camera that is based on classic Super 8 film cameras in terms of both appearance and functionality. Although the CS-8 records digitally on an SD card and not on Super 8 film, it has - true to the original - only a viewfinder and no display and only a few controls. The aim is to enable users to have an immediate recording experience - without any digital distraction. ![]() Camp Snap CS-8
Reduced design with analog operating conceptThe housing of the CS-8 is visually based on the shape and material of the Super 8 cameras of the 1960s and 70s. The CS-8 also follows this approach functionally: recordings are started and stopped via a mechanical shutter release in the handle, and zooming is done via two special buttons near the viewfinder. Connoisseurs of traditional Super 8 cameras will be able to operate the CS-8 intuitively. New are two rotary controls that allow you to set the aspect ratio and select several vintage filters for a retro film look. Rotary controls for filter and formatA second rotary control activates various filters, such as a sepia tone, an analog film grain look or a black and white mode. These effects are integrated directly into the recording - subsequent editing is not planned. ![]() Camp Snap CS-8 The supported aspect ratios - 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 and 9:16 - cover both classic and modern requirements, including the portrait format for social media. The CS-8 is therefore aimed at both nostalgics and content creators who rely on an analog aesthetic during shooting and the final result (via retro filters). No preview, no displayOne of the central features of the CS-8 is the complete absence of a display. Unlike all current cameras, the camera does not offer any possibility of direct image control or playback of the recorded material. The recording can only be viewed on the computer after the material has been transferred from the SD card. The purely optical viewfinder only helps - as with the original Super 8 camera - with framing the image section. ![]() Camp Snap CS-8 Analog displaysTwo analog displays provide information during operation about the battery level and remaining recording capacity. According to the manufacturer, the latter is around five hours on the supplied 4 GB SD card - an indication that the camera is working with high compression or a reduced frame rate, although a maximum resolution of up to 4K is possible. No more precise information is given about the sensor used, but it is indirectly clear that the video resolution can be up to 4K - depending on the selected aspect ratio, and the maximum frame rate is 30 fps. Since the CS-8 wants to imitate Super 8, the image quality probably doesn&t play such a big role - even blurry can be okay, as long as the result looks "retro" enough. Technical data of the CS-8- Recording resolution: up to 4K (depending on aspect ratio) - Storage medium: 4 GB SD card (included) - Operation: mechanical shutter release, zoom buttons, two rotary controls (aspect ratio/filter) - Aspect ratios: 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 9:16 - Filters: Sepia, film grain, black and white and more - Display instruments: analog battery level and storage capacity display - Power supply: integrated, rechargeable battery (runtime not specified) - Lanyard ready: An optionally available lanyard can be attached to the camera ![]() Camp Snap CS-8 The motto: "Live in the moment. Film like it is yesterday". With its deliberately limited functionality, the CS-8 joins the retro wave, in which old technology is used to find its way back to focusing on the creative through reduction. The Cam Snap CS-8 can now be pre-ordered internationally for a price of 130.95 euros, and delivery is scheduled to begin in mid-September. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Camp Snap CS-8 - Digitale Kamera im Super 8 Look & Feel |
