Canon has announced major firmware updates for several of its camcorders, which improve creative possibilities, image quality and functionality. This will benefit the XF405 / XF400 (firmware 126.96.36.199), XA55 / XA50 (firmware 188.8.131.52), XA40 (firmware 184.108.40.206) and the Canon LEGRIA HF G60 and HF G50 4K camcorders (firmware 220.127.116.11).
Canon XA40 gets XF-AVC
With the XA40, recording was previously only possible in MP4 at 150 Mbps. With this update the professional format XF-AVC is now available. The new file format contains additional metadata and thus offers more possibilities in post-production. The following XF-AVC recording modes are now available on the XA40:
- 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution) with 29.97p / 23.98p / 25p
- Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) with 59.94i / 59.94p / 50i / 50p / 29.97p / 25p / 23.98p
Canon XF405 / XF400 and XA55 / XA50
The firmware updates for the XF405 / XF400 and XA55 / XA50 extend the individual image parameters by the color matrix EOS Standard and production cameras. This ensures greater consistency in the output of these camcorders. Adjustments of the color matrix allow for optimal matching with other cameras involved in production. In addition, Canon Log 3 is now also available for the camcorders covered by the update for a higher dynamic range in post production.
Canon XF405 / XF400, XA55 / XA50 and HF G50 / HF G60: better autofocus
On XF405 / XF400, XA55 / XA50 and HF G50 / HF G60, the precision of the autofocus has been optimized when using the zoom. On XF405 / XF400, image quality has also been optimized in the 30x digital zoom mode Advanced Zoom - an important improvement for using the extended zoom in Full HD recordings.
New "Custom Picture" function for all camcorders
All camcorders covered by the available firmware updates also feature the new "Custom Picture" function, which allows you to adjust the image settings for sharpness, saturation, skin details and noise reduction. For better adaptation to individual working methods, the camcorders are now also able to assign additional functions such as zebra, peaking and marker to the configurable buttons.
Canon has not yet communicated the exact release date of the new firmware versions, but it should be in the not too distant future. Here is our test of Canon XF405 and XF400.
