The new year begins with a bang -- though not unexpected and anything but cheap. Because today Canon officially introduces the fullframe DSLR EOS-1D X Mark III with internal 5.5K / 60p RAW recording and sensor stabilization, confirming the rumors that have been circulating in the run-up to the launch. With a housing price of 7.299 Euro the camera will be a bit more expensive than expected. ![]() The RAW videos are recorded as a 12Bit CRM file at 5.5K (5,472 x 2,886) (50/59.94p approx. 2,600 Mbps; 30/25/24/23.98p approx. 1,800 Mbps) A 4K proxy can be recorded in parallel. The recording is done on CFexpress memory cards (dual slot). The CRM files can be processed with the supplied Digital Photo Pro software, among others.
In 4K resolution, internal recording can be done either with 10 bit HEVC/H.265 codec or with Canon Log. The EOS-1D X Mark III also supports recording files in the MP4 container for fast data transfer. Via HDMI 4K or Full HD signals can be recorded, either uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:0, 8 Bit BT709, or YCbCr 4:2:2, 10 Bit BT2020 with Canon Log. It is the first camera in the EOS-1 series to feature the 5-axis Movie Digital IS stabilisation for video recording, which minimises blur when shooting freehand - a feature otherwise only found in high-end cinema cameras such as the EOS C500 Mark II. On board is a new AF system which, according to Canon, offers 28 times the resolution of its predecessor in the centre of the sensor and 3 times the number of AF positions. In the video area, however, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF does not work with unscropped 4K or RAW at 60p/50p, which is a limitation compared to the professional Cinema-EOS models. ![]() In the EOS-1D X Mark III are a full format image sensor of the next generation (20.1 MP), which should be able to be read out faster and offers a high ISO sensitivity of max. 819,200, as well as a new DIGIC X processor. It also features a new and innovative low-pass filter (High Detail Low-Pass Filter) to prevent unwanted moiré. It is also the first camera in the EOS-1 series with integrated WLAN and Bluetooth. The battery life is also supposed to be significantly improved. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is expected to be available from February onwards at a price of 7,299 Euros (body-only but including CFe 64GB and reader).
