Now this was less expected: Canon is also getting into the VR market, announcing today the Canon EOS VR SYSTEM, which includes the new RF 5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE lens. Canon sees increasing demand for high-quality 3D 180Degree VR content. In addition to the new VR optics, the Canon EOS VR-SYSTEM also includes EOS VR Utility, a newly developed Canon VR software or EOS VR plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro. With this, 180degree VR shots (e.g. from the EOS R5) should be able to be transferred and edited directly in Adobe's Premiere Pro.
The new VR lens transfers two fisheye perspectives to a camera's single sensor, greatly simplifying alignment, synchronization and operation. The stereoscopic RF 5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE bears the red ring of the professional L-series lenses, is equipped with two UD elements per single lens and is said to impress with sharp, clear images from the center of the image to the edges. It is also well-suited for backlit shooting thanks to SWC coating, which suppresses lens reflections and flare.
The RF 5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE offers a gelatin filter holder at the rear for pre-cut ND filters, including third-party filters. The EOS R5's MF Peaking function allows for easy manual focusing, highlighting the areas in focus.
Using the EOS R5's full-frame 8K sensor, the RF 5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE enables high-resolution 180° VR shooting with a high dynamic range using Canon Log / Log 3. The high speed of f/2.8, along with the EOS R5's high ISO sensitivity, should enable good low-light shooting.
When used with the EOS VR SYSTEM, the Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE lens is simply attached to the camera. No time-consuming lens alignment is required. After shooting, the information for the left and right images are perfectly synchronized in one file. This allows Canon software or plug-in to precisely convert the captured circular fisheye dual format to a standard 180° VR format, ready for further editing in Adobe Premiere Pro or viewing with a VR headset.
The RF 5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE is expected to be available in December 2021 for €2,199.
