Canon's first full-frame cine zooms cover 20-50mm and 45-135mm focal lengths

Canon introduces Flex Zoom Series, its first premium full-frame zoom lenses for professional cinema productions. The CN-E 20-50mm T2.4 L F / FP and CN-E 45-135mm T2.4 L F / FP offer a consistently high speed of T2.4 throughout the zoom range and together cover a commonly used focal length range. They are available with EF or PL bayonet; it is also possible to switch between EF and PL, but not independently, only at an authorized Canon service center or an authorized third-party vendor.

The series is suitable for full-frame as well as Super 35mm cameras and is designed for 4K and 8K shooting. Sharpness is said to be high across the frame, with minimal focus breathing. Operated manually, the focus rotation angle is 300°.

The lenses are said to offer the same natural and warm color reproduction as previous Canon Cinema lenses. The iris is composed of 11 blades.

The Flex Zoom series is compatible with multiple communication standards, including Cooke /i Technology and Zeiss eXtended Data for the PL bayonet, in addition to EF bayonet lens-to-camera communication. This enables the display or recording of lens metadata as well as the use of functions of compatible cameras such as aberration correction, vignetting correction and focus assist. External 4-pin Lemo communication provides metadata support for cameras that are not compatible with the above protocols.

The Flex Zoom lenses weigh 3.3Kg and 3.4Kg, respectively, and feature a uniform design, front diameters, gear positions and gear rotation angles, and rugged construction. Focus, zoom, and iris dials feature industry-standard gears with 0.8mm tooth pitch to allow the use of third-party accessories for tracking. They also feature (in the dark) glow-in-the-dark metric and inch markings for easy operation in poorly lit environments.

The CN-E 20-50mm T2.4 L F / FP is expected to be available in June 2022 and the CN-E 45-135mm T2.4 L F / FP in September 2022. In terms of price, the lenses will each be priced at 18,900 euros plus VAT.
