The palm-sized Neo resembles the Avata 2 in form factor and, with a weight of only 135 grams, will be the lightest, smallest, and probably also the cheapest drone in DJI&s lineup. It is aimed at both drone beginners and, as a sort of successor to the DJI Spark, which was discontinued in 2020, at selfie filmmakers—users who simply want to quickly take a few shots of themselves from a drone&s perspective. According to leaks, the Neo is capable of AI-based object tracking and DJI&s QuickShot shooting modes for such shots—special automatically performed flight maneuvers such as circling the user for special video shots.
Neo To always have such a drone on hand for spontaneous selfie shots, it is extremely compact (157x130x49mm) and, to be quickly ready for use, can be launched directly from the palm of the hand (like the Spark). The desired flight shots can then be executed very quickly and easily via voice command—completely without a remote control.
Alternatively, the DJI Neo is also supposed to be flown immersively from a first-person perspective as an FPV drone using the Goggles and Motion Controller, and of course also with a standard controller. To ensure that the shots are safe both when launched from the hand and during close FPV shots, DJI has integrated propeller guards into the drone.
How small the new Neo is compared to the Mini 4 Pro is clearly shown in this image:
Drawback: Flight Time
However, the low weight also comes with a drawback: the flight time is said to be only a maximum of 18 minutes—a short time compared to the 46 minutes of the latest Mavic 3 or even the 34 minutes of the Mini 4 Pro. It is also likely that the camera sensor is smaller than in the other models, partly due to the compact design and partly to create some distance within the product range from the more expensive models. The Neo is supposed to be capable of recording 4K video and taking 12-megapixel photos. Also, the camera seems to be stabilized in only one dimension by a gimbal—to avoid shaky images, DJI will likely rely entirely on post-stabilization via RockSteady.
Neo
Drone Class C0
Due to its low weight of well under 250g, the Neo falls into drone class C0, which offers the advantage of being flown without a special drone license and drone label and being subject to less strict usage restrictions, making it ideal for beginners and recreational pilots.
Price
Thanks to a leak from the American supermarket chain Walmart, the (US) price of the DJI Neo is also already known: it is said to cost 329 dollars in the Fly More Combo kit along with 3 batteries—the base version of the Neo would naturally cost even less. This would make the Neo about 100 dollars cheaper than the DJI Mini 2 SE in the Fly More Combo, which costs 429 dollars (419 euros in Germany). Thus, in Germany, it will likely be priced at just over 300 euros.
