DJI Neo has landed: New intelligent selfie drone for just 199 euros

[15:09 Thu,5.September 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Through various Leaks, all the essential data about DJI&s new selfie drone were already known, which have now been confirmed with its official launch: the new, only 135-gram and palm-sized drone indeed costs just 199 euros or 350 euros in the Fly More Combo, making it DJI&s cheapest drone.

The Neo is launched from the palm of the hand after the user selects the desired Quickshot recording mode via voice command or by pressing a button on the top of the Neo. The Neo then autonomously captures ultra-stabilized 4K UltraHD footage of the user in selfie mode, optionally with AI tracking, and lands back in the hand. Since the drone operates in close proximity, the integrated rotor protection is designed to prevent injuries from the propellers. The camera features a 13mm f/2.8 ultra-wide-angle lens with a 117.6° field of view.

Alternatively, the DJI Neo can be flown immersively from a first-person perspective (FPV) using the Goggles 3 headset (in manual mode) and the RC Motion Controller 3, as well as traditionally with a controller like the RC-N3. It can also be controlled without any controller, using just Bluetooth and the app on a smartphone/tablet. The maximum transmission distance with the app and Wi-Fi is about 50 meters, while the RC-N3 controller (and also the RC-N2) allows live streaming of 1080p/30fps video up to a range of 10 km (in Europe, however, likely less due to local regulations). The app also allows setting the tracking angle and distance for automatic shots.

The Neo’s light weight of 135 grams provides all the advantages of the C0 drone class – meaning it can be flown without a special drone license or registration and is subject to fewer operational restrictions.

Video Recording

The Neo can stay in the air for up to 18 minutes and record up to 40 minutes of 4K/30fps video or 55 minutes of 1080p/60fps video at 75 Mbps bitrate in MP4 format on its 22 GB internal storage. The footage can be transferred via Wi-Fi to the DJI Fly app on a smartphone for editing or sharing online. The recordings are stabilized by the integrated one-axis (tilt) mechanical gimbal and the RockSteady or HorizonBalancing algorithm.

When connected to a smartphone, the Neo can also record audio using the phone’s microphones. For better audio quality, DJI’s Mic 2 can be connected via Bluetooth. The Fly app filters out the typically disruptive rotor noise and synchronizes it as a sound track for the video footage.

Thanks to a positioning system using infrared and monocular vision, the DJI Neo hovers stably in the air – even in winds up to level 4. The automatic return (RTH) function is also supported. The flight time is relatively short at 18 minutes, or 17 minutes with rotor protection, compared to the 46 minutes of the latest Mavic 3 or the 34 minutes of the Mini 4 Pro, but it emphasizes the Neo’s special role as a super-portable drone designed specifically for short selfie videos.

AI-powered Selfie Shots

A key feature of the new Neo as a selfie drone is its ability to autonomously follow subjects, filming the user automatically during activities like hiking, biking, or skateboarding. For particularly unique selfie shots, the Neo&s "QuickShots" function offers six intelligent recording modes that generate a variety of visually interesting clips: - Dronie: The drone flies backward and ascends while keeping the camera focused on the subject, recording video. - Circle: The drone circles around the subject. - Rocket: The drone ascends with the camera pointing downward. - Spotlight: The drone rotates while keeping the target in the frame. - Helix: The drone ascends and circles around the subject. - Boomerang: The drone flies in an oval path around the subject, rising while moving away from the starting point and descending as it returns.

Since the Neo lacks side obstacle sensors and thus obstacle detection, users should be cautious when flying, as it cannot autonomously avoid obstacles. The Neo&s removable battery is charged via USB-C cable, and DJI Neo&s two-way charging station allows three batteries to be charged simultaneously.

Competition

The Neo is DJI’s answer to the successful HoverAir X1 selfie drone, which has just been launched in two upgraded versions, the[HoverAir X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max](www.slashcam.de/news/single/Neue-HoverAir-X1-Pro-und-X1-Pro-Max-Selfie-Drohnen-18757.html), offering 4K and 8K recording, respectively. Their larger 1/1.3" sensors and 4K60fps or 8K30fps promise higher-quality video (the Promax even with 10-bit HLG HDR), but they are significantly more expensive, costing 429 and 629 dollars.

Price and Availability

The DJI Neo is available immediately from DJI and authorized dealers for 199 euros (solo) or in the DJI Neo Fly More Combo (which includes 3 batteries, a controller, a 3-battery charger, and two spare rotors) for 349 euros. This makes it considerably cheaper than DJI&s current least expensive drone, the DJI Mini 2 SE (Mini 4K aka Mini 2 SE), which costs 299 euros including the RC-N1C controller.
