DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro - new sensor with dynamic range of 13,5 stops

Today DJI is presenting its new Osmo Action 5 Pro with a range of new features. Although much was already known about the new camera unofficially (www.slashcam.de/news/single/Was-wird-Pro-an-der-DJI-Osmo-5-ausser-Super-Zeitlup-18801.html), a few open questions can of course be answered after the official launch. The Action 5 has the additional designation “Pro” because, according to DJI, it should offer professional-level image quality, among other things. For this purpose, a next-generation 1/1.3” sensor with a pixel size of 2.4μm is installed, which is supposed to support a high dynamic range of up to 13.5 f-stops. As before, 4K can be filmed in D-Log M with 10 bit, but now Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) has also been added.

New 4nm chip and AI features Another new feature is a high-performance 4nm chip, which enables several new functions thanks to its computing power in combination with machine learning algorithms. For example, the Osmo Action 5 offers integrated subject centering and tracking, a kind of gimbal functionality. According to DJI, the camera recognizes the position of a subject and adjusts the image composition so that the subject remains centred in every image - the image section is reduced for this, with a maximum possible 2.7K at 60p - and this is then automatically shifted around by the camera on the sensor as far as possible, similar to electronic image stabilization, only even more resolutely. This subject centering is obviously aimed less at action cam-type POV shots and more at use as a “normal” camera.
Integrated subject centering and tracking
A SuperNight mode with AI noise reduction algorithms is intended to brighten up the image in very dimly lit environments. According to the leaks, the Super Slow Motion feature, in which the camera calculates a 32x slow motion (960p) from a 1080p240 clip using up to quadruple frame interpolation, was not discovered during a quick review of the menus. The feature is also not mentioned in the German announcement, but is advertised in a promo clip.
Improved features The Osmo Action 5 Pro is said to provide up to four hours of continuous operation on a single battery, about twice as long as the Action 4. This is achieved because the 4nm chip has a lower power consumption and the battery has also become stronger at 1950 mAh. There are also better and slightly larger OLED touchscreens with tempered glass on the front and back, which are said to offer a peak brightness of 1000 cd/㎡. Another new feature is the integrated memory, which comprises 47 GB.
DJI has also improved the water resistance - it is now max. 20m without additional housing, an industry record. The camera can be set to automatically record when it is underwater and also has a built-in pressure gauge to record underwater depth, duration and altitude (certified to EN13319).
The Osmo Action 5 Pro can be connected to DJI&s wireless microphone system (Mic 2 transmitter) via Bluetooth, enabling audio recording at a higher sampling rate.
Compatible with DJI Mic 2
The DJI Mimo app, with which the action cam can connect via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as usual, brings new features such as “capturing live photos and high-resolution image recordings in 4K” (what exactly is meant by this is not clear from the pre-announcement), the ability to reproduce flat color profiles in D-Log M for individual adjustments, and the ability to export videos in 4K/120fps with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Photos and videos can now be downloaded from the DJI camera in the background while the smartphone is used for other applications.

Price and availability The Osmo Action 5 Pro is available immediately and is offered in the standard combo for 379 euros, the adventure combo costs 479 euros. As always, various accessories tailored to the camera will also be available, including a new multifunctional charging handle.
