DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.2 brings new Fairlight features and free Foley library

[12:13 Fri,6.March 2020   by Thomas Richter]

The latest version of Blackmagic&s DaVinci Resolve (Studio) 16.2 brings a new Fairlight Sound Library and enhancements to the colorgrading and editing workflow in addition to the new features already announced at NAMM new features for the integrated Fairlight audio suite such as the new "Edit-Selection" editing mode and context-specific editing tools and commands.

Fairlight

The new " Edit-Selection" editing mode is designed to speed up audio post-production and allows you to adjust parameters while playback is running. For example, a crossfade can be inserted "live" during a mix without having to pause playback. The idea behind this tool is to decouple the editing tools from the playback head, allowing for more direct user feedback.

Pro-Tools users know and appreciate this way of working, which is hidden there under the term Smart Tools. Fairlight&s commitment to moving closer to Pro Tools is also evident in the fact that there will be a special keyboard layout that corresponds to Pro Tools shortcuts.

In addition, audio effects are now better categorized into groups, and working with tracks in the workflow has been spiced up (easier renaming and arranging). Last but not least the new "Bounce to Clips to Files" function sounds interesting. With this function, clips can be rendered directly into the file system. It&s a kind of screenshot, but with an audio file. All these improvements will be delivered with the DaVinci Resolve Update 16.2, which will be free of charge again.

Other Fairlight-specific improvements include scalable waveforms in the Fairlight Timeline, new FairlightFX effects and level meter plug-ins, support for immersive 3D audio formats (MPEG-H) and improvements in AAF import and export (direct import of AAF sequences into the Timeline and export option for fades and fade handles).

Also new is the Blackmagic Fairlight Sound Library 1.0 with over 500 royalty-free Foley sounds for use in the Fairlight Foley sampler of DaVinci Resolve 16.

Editing / Colorgrading

In the editing area, the update improves, among other things, the performance when loading and switching timelines with many audio tracks and allows the creation of a compund clip defined by in and out points. The Media Pool now includes metadata support for audio files with up to 24 embedded channels, now supports sorting by date, and displays the location of clips in the Smart Bin.

Colorgrading has been improved for collaborative projects in terms of stability and usability, and has been enhanced to include Smart Filters for keywords and people metadata, and primary gradie value input via numeric input.

Also new is support for 32bit float audio, HLG Gamma in HDR Scopes, Blackmagic RAW SDK 1.7, RED SDK 7.2.1 (including decoding of Komodo clips), REDWideGamut Log3G10 IDT and the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III camera.

Blackmagic recommends all users of Resolve to update, but advises to backup all active databases and current projects before upgrading to version 16.2.
