The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is the basis of many compression methods that are still used in many places. Ranging from (Motion) JPEG to ProRes is found this method of local frame rate-cutting in many compression methods for motion pictures. We are in the last 20 years already encountered many DCT explanations, but this video of computerphile are particularly hard to make the background of the process really understand in a quarter of an hour.
