Roger Deakins uses the involuntary time off from filmmaking for podcasts -- about filmmaking, of course. Together with his wife James Deakins, who also works on the film as a script supervisor, he talks in the half to one hour episodes about various topics related to the work of a DoP. So far, location scouting, practical lighting and image composition have been discussed. Many more are to follow, also with the support of colleagues who have joined in. The most recent topic was the conversion from film to digital shooting.
It is a real pleasure to hear Roger Deakins talk about his work, images and films, and of course there is also something to learn. Deakins has long been answering questions in his
his own forum, which is unusual for a top-class cameraman. In fact, readers' questions are often the starting point for a podcast episode, and anyone who wants to can also ask the "Team Deakins" a question themselves by e-mail.
Roger Deakins looks back on a long career behind the camera and was awarded the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in both 2020 and 2018, for the films "1917" and "Bladerunner 2049" -- here we had collected some interesting
interview clips about his camera work back then.
