More than ten years after the launch of Dolby Vision, Dolby is now introducing the next generation of its HDR format. The central innovation in Dolby Vision is the AI-powered Content Intelligence, which automatically adapts the display to the content, device, and environment. This addresses the problem that films are often reproduced very differently and are sometimes perceived as too dark or too bright. Content IntelligenceThe new Content Intelligence expands the capabilities of Dolby Vision IQ, which was introduced around 5 years ago, and adapts the image to the respective content, the device on which it is being viewed, and the respective ambient lighting in order to enable a consistent viewing experience regardless of these various influences. It includes the functions Precision Black, Light Sense, as well as a sports and gaming optimization.
Precision Black is designed to improve the display of dark scenes and make image details visible - without impairing the original artistic intentions of the filmmakers and falsifying the images. This function is intended to address problems of users who perceive the images as too dark on their devices and cannot recognize any details. The Light Sense function adapts the images on compatible TVs - similar to ![]() ![]() In addition, Dolby Vision 2 supports bidirectional tone mapping, which, according to Dolby, should enable powerful TVs to display higher brightness, sharper contrast and richer colors by giving content producers more control over how the display&s capabilities are used. The sports and gaming optimization brings new improvements such as white point adjustment and motion control, which are specially tailored to the special requirements of live sports and gaming. Tone-MappingThe new tone mapping uses the capabilities of modern televisions, which are brighter and have better color reproduction than the televisions at the time of the introduction of Dolby Vision. The bidirectional tone mapping is intended to give creatives new control options. This should make it possible to display higher brightness, sharper contrast and deeply saturated colors on powerful televisions - while at the same time preserving the artist&s creative vision by giving him control over the adjustments. However, it will probably be difficult for filmmakers to "mix" Dolby Vision 2 if many different displays and their specific properties have to be taken into account for an optimal display. Control over the infamous Motion SmoothingDolby Vision 2 also addresses the controversial topic of "Motion Smoothing", i.e. the setting that ![]() But of course, despite all the assurances that they do not want to distort the artistic vision of the filmmakers, there is also the danger with the new functions that the original material will be undesirably changed. Purists will therefore probably deactivate these new functions in order to retain maximum control over the image themselves. The new Authentic Motion function is intended to enable scene-by-scene control of the motion display in order to reduce unwanted judder and still preserve an authentic cinematic look. Dolby has not yet revealed how this will happen. Two versions of Dolby Vision 2Dolby splits the implementation of Dolby Vision 2 into two versions: Dolby Vision 2 (Mainstream) and Dolby Vision 2 Max (High-End) - the latter with additional premium functions for top displays; what exactly these are is not yet clear. Fortunately, Dolby Vision 2 is backwards compatible, i.e. existing films in Dolby Vision remain playable. However, the new functions that can be addressed from the production side are only displayed on Dolby Vision 2-enabled devices. AvailabilityInterestingly, the Chinese manufacturer Hisense is said to be the first TV brand to produce televisions with Dolby Vision 2. The new MediaTek Pentonic 800 with the MiraVision Pro PQ Engine will be the first chip to integrate Dolby Vision 2. When the first devices will be launched is to be announced at a later date. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Dolby Vision 2 - KI-optimiertes Bild, neues Tone-Mapping und Authentic Motion |
