Epic Games has launched an early access program for its MetaHuman Creator, a tool that makes it easy and fast to create extremely realistic-looking digital models of humans for the Unreal Engine. Based on a library of human faces, details such as facial expressions, clothing, skin color, teeth, eye color, lips, age, hairstyle, body shape, and even the pattern of the iris can be selectively changed in the browser to achieve the desired look.

The created face can then be brought to life in real time by means of three available animation sequences. With a click, the newly created digital human yawns or smiles. Once you are satisfied with the model, it can be downloaded - fully rigged and ready for animation or motion capture in the Unreal Engine - via Quixel Bridge.
Alternatively, the source data can be saved as a Maya file including meshes, skeleton, face rig, animation controls and materials and then further refined and customized in a 3D modeling program.

Unreal thus enables even smaller developer studios to easily use realistic humans in their projects. And perhaps filmmakers will also see new scenarios for such digital models - especially since the Unreal Engine is also becoming more and more interesting for film production since it can also be used instead of green screens for virtual real-time film backgrounds via LED wall - for example via ILM&s Stagecraft - due to its photorealistic qualities. As the realism of human digital characters increases, they too could be used in more and more films.
Epic Games supports Unreal Engine&s Live Link Face iOS app and is also working with vendors to support solution from ARKit, DI4D, Digital Domain, Dynamixyz, Faceware, JALI, Speech Graphics and Cubic Motion.
