Fuji Rumors has now learned from several reliable sources that FUJIFILM is planning to introduce a medium format camera aimed specifically at filmmakers.
The GFX series has been serving the niche of digital medium format cameras for photographers for years - and almost alone. While Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony "only" offer APS-C and 35mm/full-frame DSLMs, FUJI deliberately omits the typical 35mm/full-frame format from its product portfolio.
In addition to the S35 format, which is relevant for scenic filmmakers, there is therefore "only" one very atypical oversized sensor format available, which in the film sector would most likely be located in another niche - the large format cameras.
The fact that FUJI now wants to launch a special model for filmmakers in precisely this format sounds rather implausible at first. However, several sources have reportedly already confirmed the existence of this ominous GFX25.
Fuji Rumors has also compiled some interesting sensor details as specs:
Thus, the GFX25 is said to be similar to a Sony A7S with relatively low resolution but very large sensors for particularly high light sensitivity and fast readout behavior. According to all rumors, this should be a 6K sensor with a width of approx. 44 mm, which would correspond almost exactly to the sensor size of a Sony A7S (8µm), only 1:1 in 6K instead of 4K.
Fuji Rumors mentions a maximum of 5.8K/30p in Open Gate 4:3 as well as a possible 5.8K in 60p at 17:9 as rumored formats. 120fps could also be possible with capped 4K, but the sources are no longer sure.
If this camera rumor turns out to be true, FUJI should also eliminate the rolling shutter disadvantages of typical medium format sensors with this sensor (which is likely to be strongly based on the A7SIII). Due to the high resolutions, these always tend to have relatively long readout times. A "fast" GFX for filmmakers could therefore make perfect sense from this point of view. In any case, we are curious.
