For the weekend, a glimpse into film statistics - presented in a clear and concise way! A graphic depicting the evolution of various film genres from 1910 to 2021 is currently circulating on social media. It shows at a glance what percentage of films listed on IMDB in a given year are assigned to a particular genre, such as action, romance, or fantasy. ![]() Although the approach is not entirely precise due to the rough grid of 12 genres without mixed forms (films can be categorized multiple times) and the dependence on the genre assignment in the database. However, this simplification avoids unnecessary details, and the result largely corresponds to the subjective impression of film history and the film releases of recent decades. At the same time, some developments are surprising.
Westerns and musicals, once produced in series by Hollywood, have almost completely disappeared, as have war films, though not entirely. In contrast, horror genres such as horror and thriller are enjoying increasing popularity, while fantasy films remain relatively stable - albeit at a lower level than expected. Comedies continue to dominate, although their share has been declining for some time. While about one in four new films 25 years ago was humorous in some way (or was supposed to be), today it is only one in five. Noteworthy is the rapid increase in documentary productions. This trend began in the late 1960s, intensified in the 1990s, and has continued since about 2000. Accordingly, documentaries now account for about one-fifth of all new films. So what happened in the 1990s? The introduction of digital cameras suddenly made it possible to create and distribute documentary footage relatively easily, quickly, and inexpensively. With AI, the next technological shift is now imminent. Its impact on the distribution of film genres is likely to be among the less relevant consequences from a societal perspective. Nevertheless, after a certain period of time, one might look at an analysis like this and wonder what changes took place in the late 2020s.
