Until a year ago, Filmic Pro was THE app that was considered practically indispensable for professional video work with a smartphone. But when the company was taken over by Bending Spoons, a lot changed very quickly.
The new owner changed the payment method to
subscription model, which made the app drastically more expensive for all users. This alone is likely to have had quite a detrimental effect on the distribution of the program. The fact that Blackmagic then entered the market this fall with a comparable and free
Camera App for iPhones is likely to have persuaded even more previously loyal users to switch or quit.
With this in mind, it is perhaps not so surprising that Bending Spoons has reportedly laid off all employees behind the popular iOS and Android app Filmic Pro. According to a report by PetaPixel, the former Filmic team now has no employees of its own - even the company's former founder and CEO, Neill Barham, is said to be no longer on board.

CTO Christopher Cohen, for example, confirmed quite clearly in this way that he was no longer working for the company.A former "Chief Operating Officer", on the other hand, replied only somewhat more cryptically on LinkedIn that this journey is now over.
None of this bodes well for the future of Filmic Pro as an app. With its subscription model, Bending Spoons will probably continue to "rent out" the existing app for as long as possible without further developing or maintaining it.In the best-case scenario, Bending Spoons could present a new app under the brand name with a new team, but we think this is rather unlikely. Or Filmic could be sold on again as a brand...
