Filmmaker Mode for TVs takes ambient light into account in the future

[11:51 Mon,10.January 2022   by Thomas Richter]

About 2 years ago, the UHD Alliance, on the initiative of some famous directors such as Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan, defined a special cinema mode, the Filmmaker Mode, with the help of which films are to be displayed on TVs as much as possible as their creators intended and thus provide a special true-to-the-original and cinematic experience.

Now the second phase 2 of the development of the Filmmaker Mode was presented in the context of the CES 2022, whose goal is it to adapt the shown pictures for the optimal representation by means of new light sensors in future televisions to the available ambient light in each case. In the previous recommendations for Filmmaker Mode, it was assumed that movies would be watched in rather dark rooms, which is often not the case. Using light sensors, the display could be corrected in terms of brightness and colors according to the prevailing light situation in such a way that the pictures in the end look as much as possible as originally intended.

According to UHDA Alliance, Filmmaker Mode is already available in all new LG and Samsung TVs, as well as select models from Hisense, Panasonic, Philips/TP Vision and Skyworth, projectors from LG, Samsung, Benq and Hisense, and via Amazon Prime Video (for now, only on LG TVs).

What is Filmmaker Moide?
"Filmmaker Mode" disables any post-processing, such as the long-controversial motion smoothing, which has long been a nuisance for filmmakers. In addition, Filmmaker Mode is designed to ensure that films are displayed not only in the correct aspect ratio, but also with the original colors, contrast and frame rate. This means that special metadata must be defined to provide this information to the TVs.

The exact specifications of the Filmmaker mode:
- A D65 white point (6500K) is applied to SDR and HDR content.
- Frame rate and aspect ratio of source content is maintained
- Motion interpolation is disabled
- Overscan is disabled unless the content signals otherwise
- Post sharpening functions are disabled
- Noise reduction is disabled
- Processing of other image enhancements is also disabled
