Zoom is doing a good job of product maintenance and has now added a whole series of new functions to the firmware update 5.0 for its 3 year old 10 track audio recorder F8 (
here our test), which were previously only available for the new model F8n.
After the update, the F8 supports Advanced Look-Ahead Hybrid Limiters (which should effectively prevent unwanted clipping) and introduces an AutoMix function (which automatically sets the levels to minimize ambient noise). Other new features include a selectable volume curve and a digital boos (up to +24 dB) for the headphones; a new "fader" mode for the home screen and an increased maximum fader level from +12 dB to +24 dB.

Also new is the possibility to record simultaneously on SD card and via USB audio interface. And the iOS App of the F8 can work with the new Zoom F-Control FRC-8 user interface after the update. The update makes the F8 even more attractive than the new
F8n for around 1,200 euros, especially since the price is now only around
700 euros.
