Firmware updates extend 4K HDR support of Sony monitors // IBC 2017

[13:37 Mon,18.September 2017   by Thomas Richter]

Sony announced on the IBC 2017 firmware updates for several of its professional monitors, which provide a wider dynamic range and a larger color gamut, making them fit for 4K and HDR (High Dynamic Range) productions. The latest firmware updates improve the color rendition of the 4K-TRIMASTER EL-OLED monitor PVM-X550, the Full HD-TRIMASTER EL-OLED monitors of the series PVM-A (PVM-A250, PVM-A170) and the Full HD-LCD monitors of the series LMD-A (LMD-A240, LMD-A220, LMD-A220).

The new firmware for the Sony PVM-X550 provides a new high brightness mode that provides a wider dynamic range to display more realistic colors. The new mode is optimized for 4K color correction and achieved more than 180 percent of the current PVM-X550 in the HDR luminance test. Brightness and saturation are controlled by the built-in signal processing, which provides a 12-bit output signal. Designed by Sony specifically for OLED monitors, this is used in the BVM series and the PVM-X550 to reproduce deep black tones. The high brightness mode can also be used in quad view mode. This allows individual adjustment of the EOT (Electro-Optical Transfer Function, EOTF) functions and a color scale with wider HDR brightness on each of the four individual images.

The firmware update 2.0 for the monitors of the PVM-A and LMD-A series gives them a larger color space. The update supports the ITU-R BT. 2020 color space and enables the processing of quad-link 2SI-3G SDI signals. With the update, the DCI-P3 and S-Gamut3/S-Gamut3. cine and Adobe RGB color spaces can also use the larger color gamut with matching EOTFs, such as 2.6 gamma with S-Log3 (SDR) and S-Log2 (SDR). In addition, the update version 2.0 offers four advanced features for outdoor use with regard to camera shots and live events: The sync-free side-by-side configuration allows the user to monitor two images without synchronization. False colours can be used to check the exposure level of the camera at a glance. Mute mutes users faster and more easily. And with the flexible area markers that can be placed anywhere on the screen, you can create display options.

The high brightness mode for the PVM X550 will be available from the first quarter of 2018, the firmware version 2.0 for the PVM-A and LMD-A series from September 2017.
