The well-known open-source audio editor Audacity is facing what is probably the biggest overhaul in its 25-year history. With the announced Version 4, the development team plans a comprehensive redesign of the software, aiming to fundamentally modernize its user interface, stability, and overall usability.
First insights indicate that the application will receive a significantly more structured and contemporary appearance, oriented towards established workflows. The focus is on a new interface designed to make usage more intuitive and reduce barriers for users.

Version 4 of the free audio editor Audacity is coming soon
The developers, led by Martin Keary (Tantacrul) from Muse Group, emphasize that this is more than just a visual update. By cleaning up old code and switching to the Qt framework, the application is expected to become smoother and more reliable overall. Existing problems, for example with features like Sync-Lock, should be a thing of the past. An overview of the upcoming new features can be found here: support.audacityteam.org/au4/new-in-audacity-4/audacity-4-alpha-1-release-notes#new-features-and-improvements-in-audacity-4.
These new features are expected to be first seen in an alpha version, which is anticipated to be available for initial testing from early November. Such early, open builds primarily serve to collect feedback and improve stability before a final version is released. A first video already provides a good look at what's coming our way:
For the video community at slashCam, the revitalized audio editor could become an interesting option for quick and straightforward editing of voice recordings or sound design elements, away from complex DAWs. We will certainly keep an eye on the further development of the project.
