This free application engine combines the Gimp with a very Photoshop-like interface. One of the biggest criticisms Gimp falls under the table: namely, that Gimp could use only cryptic. Currently there is only a Windows version, but a Linux and a Mac version announced. We ourselves have not tried it yet, but be sure to be also take a look at it.
