GH5 Firmware update 2.0 brings ALL-Intra with 400 Mbps, 4K HLG HDR video and more // IFA 2017

GH5 Firmware update 2.0 brings ALL-Intra with 400 Mbps, 4K HLG HDR video and more // IFA 2017

[16:47 wed,30.August 2017   by ]

Panasonic has officially released the firmware update 2.0 for the GH5 as expected -- surprisingly, it not only brings the promised features but also some additional extras. The new firmware is expected to be released at the end of September 2017.

The expected and now confirmed functions:

a new ALL-Intra 4:2:24:2:2 im Glossar erklärt 10bit recording mode with 400 Mbps ALL-Intra compression in 4K or 200 Mbps in 1080 FullHD. An SD card of the Video Speed Class 60 or 60 is used for recording.

a 4K HDR recording mode using the new Hybrid Log GammaGamma im Glossar erklärt Mode (HLG) which can be selected in the Photo Style function. In addition, 4K HLG content can be recorded at a low bit rate for playback on HEVC-compatible devices such as Panasonic 4K HDR TVs

higher resolution (effectively 18 megapixels) when capturing 4:3 video using anamorphic lenses. In addition, the new Anamorphic Desqueeze Display mode allows you to view a magnified image while recording with 2.0x and 1.33x anamorphic lenses. The Video Guide Line mode allows you to display images during recording in different formats such as Cinescope, 16:9 and 1:1. This mode can be used not only for anamorphic images, but also in other
Shooting modes.

The extra features in detail:

In video mode, AF tracking has been optimized -- for example, the starting point of a self-defined focus can be selected on the live screen of the camera prior to AF tracking. In general, autofocus should work more precisely with low-contrast subjects.

There are also improvements to the image stabilization, it is supposed to support 2.0x and 1.33x anamorphic lenses in line with the new shooting mode. A new I. S. Lock mode informs the camera that any horizontal movements of the camera are not intended and should be compensated if possible.

A new feature is the possibility to control the GH5 via USB via a free Tethering Windows/OS X software - for this purpose all control elements and recording options of the GH5 can be operated on the computer and there is a full screen preview (at least in Photo mode) with the possibility to save the pictures directly on the PC.

The GH5 increases performance in 4K and 6K photo mode: the waiting time from one burst to the next is halved;[Loop Rec] in[6K Photo] (Panasonic recommends the use of Panasonic Video Speed Class 90 SD cards for this purpose)
In addition to some minor improvements in operation, a bug in Relay Recording / Backup Recording is also fixed, so that the file numbering should now be reliable and error-free. The image quality should also be improved when using some settings (Extended low ISO, Intelligent D-range Control and Highlight Shadow).
