Gesture Control and More: DJI Neo 2 Brings Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing Including LiDAR

[17:40 Thu,30.October 2025   by Thomas Richter]

As predicted[www.slashcam.de/news/single/DJI-Neo-2-kommt-am-30--Oktober-mit-LiDAR-und-groesse-19616.html], DJI has officially unveiled the new intelligent 4K selfie drone, the Neo 2, today—strangely, not worldwide at the same time, but for now[only in Asia (the Neo 2 product page is only visible if you select an Asian region, such as the English-speaking Hong Kong, in the bottom right corner).

Like its predecessor[www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/DJI-Neo-ausprobiert--4K-Selfie-Drohne--die-sich-ohne-Fuehrerschein-und-ohne-externe-Steuerung-fliegen-laesst--al.html], the DJI Neo 2 is an ultra-compact (and inexpensive) camera drone aimed at beginners and casual users, specializing in selfie shots.

Weighing only 151 grams, the Neo 2 falls into the C0 drone class and brings numerous improvements over the first generation, including—for the first time in this weight and size class—omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, combined with a range of new control and automatic functions such as gesture control and ActiveTrack. Further upgrades include longer flight time, larger internal storage, and recording up to 4K at 100 fps (compared to 4K at 30 fps on the Neo 1).

Old Camera - New Gimbal

The rumors about a larger sensor unfortunately did not materialize—the Neo 2&s sensor remains 1/2" with a resolution of 12 megapixels—DJI likely wants to maintain the gap to the next higher drone models. However, the lens is slightly faster (f/2.2 aperture instead of f/2.8) and now allows video recording at 4K at 60 fps or 100 fps in slow-motion mode. The 4K 100fps recording is only possible when using the remote control or the Motion Controller. The maximum video bitrate in MP4 is slightly higher at 80 Mbps than the predecessor, which records at a maximum of 75 Mbps.

Additionally, there is now a 2.7K vertical mode specifically for portrait-oriented social media formats. The internal storage for video recording has more than doubled and now comprises 49 GB (up from only 22 GB previously). Video data can now be transferred to the smartphone via WLAN at up to 80 MB/s.

What is new, however, is the 2-axis gimbal (the Neo could only mechanically stabilize on one axis), which, together with electronic image stabilization (EIS), is intended to provide even smoother footage. The internal image optimization of the Neo 2 also automatically optimizes skin tones and contrast for natural portrait shots.

Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance via LiDAR and New Sensors

The central technical update compared to the first Neo generation is the new sensor system: A monocular all-round vision system, supplemented by forward-facing LiDAR and infrared sensors on the underside, now enables obstacle detection in all directions. This allows the Neo 2 to independently detect and automatically fly around objects in the flight path while tracking subjects. For an entry-level drone, this is a significant upgrade that should considerably increase safety during flight maneuvers. Additional protection is provided—as with the predecessor—by the (removable) propeller guard.

Improved Tracking Functions

The Neo 2 uses a revised ActiveTrack system that now supports eight movement directions—including diagonal tracking. According to DJI, the drone achieves a maximum tracking speed of 12 m/s while remaining more stable than its predecessor. It can capture the subject more precisely, especially when filming fast movements like running or cycling (which now has its own mode). In more complex scenarios, it automatically switches to a backward tracking mode to avoid obstacles while keeping the subject in focus.

(Slightly) Longer Flight Time

Another (small) upgrade has been made to the flight time—it is now a maximum of 19 instead of 18 minutes (without propeller guard) or 17 minutes with the guard.

Quieter Due to New Rotors?

According to rumors, a new rotor design was supposed to reduce the previously very annoying, high-pitched buzzing propeller noise of the Neo. And indeed, the new rotors of the Neo 2 (right) compared to the Neo (left) can be clearly seen in the following image from below:

DJI does not mention the new rotors or a reduction in flight noise on its website—so initial tests will have to show whether the Neo 2 has become quieter.

Control via Gestures, Voice, and App

In addition to classic control via the remote control or Motion Controller, the Neo 2 offers several touchless operating options.

- Gesture Control: The drone can be positioned or prompted to land using simple hand movements.

- Voice Control: The user can issue simple flight commands via voice using a smartphone or Bluetooth headset—however, currently only in English and Mandarin according to DJI&s Hong Kong site.

- Palm Takeoff & Return to Palm: Takeoff and landing occur directly from the palm of the hand, made possible by precise optical object recognition.

These control options particularly facilitate spontaneous filming, especially when solo during sports activities.

New DJI Neo 2 Digital Transceiver - necessary for O4

DJI Neo 2 Digital Transceiver for O4

For video transmission via O4, the Neo 2 now seems to require the new optional, approximately 9-gram DJI Neo 2 Digital Transceiver—the Neo had this integrated. The small radio module attaches to the rear of the Neo 2 and has two antennas via which video transmission to a remote control or the DJI Goggles is enabled. The maximum range remains 6 kilometers. Without the module, transmission and control occur via WLAN—but the maximum distance is then limited to 500 meters.

Intelligent Shooting Programs

As with larger DJI models, several automatic modes are available for the Neo 2, including Dolly Zoom, QuickShots, and MasterShots. The SelfieShot function allows fully automatic framing—for example, for full-body or group shots—without manual camera guidance.

Comparison of DJI Neo with Neo 2

Compared to the DJI Neo, the Neo 2 brings numerous functional improvements:
- higher video resolution (4K/100 fps instead of 4K/30 fps)
- 2-axis instead of 1-axis gimbal
- ActiveTrack and gesture control for the first time
- omnidirectional obstacle avoidance
- doubled internal storage (49 GB instead of 22 GB)
- higher tracking speed (12 m/s instead of 8 m/s)
- higher data transfer rate via WLAN (80 MB/s instead of 25 MB/s)

Price and Release Date

It is unclear when DJI will make the Neo 2 available for sale in this country (or in Europe). The price in Hong Kong makes it clear that DJI will charge for the new features—the Neo 2 costs about 34 Euros more than the old Neo (1,699 HK Dollars vs 1,399 HK Dollars), so the price of the Neo 2 in this country should be around a similar amount higher, thus slightly under 250 Euros. The new DJI Neo 2 Digital Transceiver costs the equivalent of about 15 Euros.
