With two new devices - Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL - Google wants to play in the upper class of smartphones again this year. The only difference between the two models is their size, display and battery. Apart from many AI goodies, slashCAM readers are mainly interested in the built-in camera, which seems to set new standards. At least that's what the DxO-Labs found. As with the previous year's model they had the opportunity to measure the smartphone before the official presentation.
The built-in 1/2.6-inch sensor is capable of 12.2 MPixel 4K and is exposed by a f/1.8 fixed focal length. Thanks to dual-pixel technology, the camera should be able to focus very quickly and reliably. Whether Canon will play here is not quite clear. An optical image stabilizer in combination with electronic correction is said to achieve a unique stabilization for smartphones:
However, the 4K recording only goes up to 30p (FullHD up to 120fps). Apple has already moved on with 4K/60p. In the DxO-Mark the new Pixel 2 models takes clearly lead with 96 points in the video-bestlist.
However, Google has demanding prices in the region of around 1000 euros for top-of-the-range models: the smallest Pixel 2 with 64 GByte costs 799 euros (and with 128 GByte it costs 909 euros). For Pixel 2 XL, 939 Euro (64 GByte) or 1,049 Euro (128 GByte) need to be loosened. There is no SD slot, by the way, but there is no limit to the amount of storage space for videos in the cloud.
