Hollyland Lark M1: Affordable two-channel wireless clip-on microphone system

[11:58 Wed,6.July 2022   by Thomas Richter]

Chinese manufacturer Hollyland has released the Lark M1, a new wireless lavalier microphone system. The compact Lark M1 is suitable for video production, field recording, live streaming, vlogging, interviews, podcasting and remote conferencing. The Lark M1 system consists of an omnidirectional microphone the size of a typical USB flash drive, which is lightweight at around 12 grams and doubles as a transmitter, and a receiver that is only slightly larger (weighing 17.5 grams).

The system transmits speech at up to 48kHz/16bit and has a maximum range of 200 meters (in clear view). Ambient noise is filtered out on demand by Hollyland&s HearClear noise reduction. Similar to, for example, RØDE&s Wireless GO II wireless microphone system, the Lark M1 is available with one (Solo) or two transmitters (Duo) - depending on the requirements profile.

The compact transport case included with the Duo Bundle also serves as a charging station for the transmitter and receiver units via USB-C, offering up to 8 hours of runtime for both. The time required for a full charge is 1.5 hours. However, both the receiver or transmitter also have their own USB-C port through which they can be charged.

Intelligent device detection switches between mobile and camera modes without requiring manual adjustment - though manual control is possible if needed. The transmitters are attached by means of an integrated clip, for example on the collar of a shirt during interviews. Included with the Hollyland Lark M1 Duo are, among other things, a 3.5mm TRS-to-TRS cable and a 3.5mm TRS-to-TRRS cable (for computers/phones with 3.5mm jack plugs), which can be used to transmit the analog audio from the receiver to cameras or PCs. Alternatively, the sound can also be transmitted digitally via USB-C in better quality. The transmitter does not have the option to connect an external microphone.

The Hollyland Lark M1 Duo two-channel clip-on microphone is available now for 165 euros. While this makes it significantly cheaper than, for example, DJI&s Mic 2-channel wireless microphone system, which costs 329 euros, or RØDE&s Wireless GO II wireless microphone system, which starts at 240 euros, it also lacks some of the important features of these two, such as the ability to also record sound internally, adjust the audio level, use an external microphone (RØDE only), or monitor audio levels or charge status via an integrated display.

Here&s our review of the RØDE Wirelesss Go II, which shined with its good sound quality, 2-channel capability, internal backup recording, minimal weight, and ease of use.
