Huawei P40 Pro Smartphone comes with generous 1/1.28 inch camera sensor

[10:14 Thu,2.April 2020   by blip]

Huawei presented the new Smartphone flagship P40 series, which brings some innovations in the camera section (powered by Leica) compared to the P30 series. It is now also possible to film in 4K mode in 60p. Also, the 50MP main camera of both models now features a 1/1.28-inch sensor with a pixel size of 2.44μm, which is very generous for smartphones. As with the P30, there is a RYYB color filter (instead of the typical RGB bayer filter), which is supposed to provide a higher light output and dynamic range. A 4-in-1 "pixel binning" is supported, and an Octa PD autofocus provides sharpness. The focal length corresponds to about 23mm converted to Kb.

The P40 Pro is also equipped with a 12 MP f/3.4 telephoto camera, whose 5x optical zoom goes back to the periscope system - a sensor angled at 90° with prisms in front to redirect the light beam accordingly. The zoom factor can still be extended digitally (10x hybrid, 50x maximum). Huawei also uses the RYYB color filter here.

The third camera module of the P40 Pro is a 40MP ultra-wide angle camera with 1/1.54-inch sensor and f/1.8 at a Kb equivalent focal length of 18mm. A 16-in-1 pixel binning produces "superpixels" of 4.48μm size, which is why this module should be able to work with up to ISO 51200. In 720p, super slow motion at 7680fps is possible, as with the Mate 30 Pro. Unlike the other two cameras, this one is not optically stabilized, but there is also an electronic stabilization available, which processes gyro data.

A ToF module for recording depth information is also back on board here - the artificially calculated bokeh is supposed to be available for videos as well, it seems. Also implemented in the P40 Pro is a multi-spectrum colour temperature sensor with AI algorithm, which is intended to achieve better colour accuracy.

The smaller and cheaper P40 (without Pro) has an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x zoom and a 16MP ultra wide angle camera (17mm) in addition to the same main camera.

Both P40 models have the Kirin 990 5G chipset and support 5G and Wi-Fi 6 Plus. The 90Hz 6.58" OLED touch display of the P40 Pro has a resolution of 1200x2640 pixels (~441 ppi density) and is supposed to support DCI-P3 and HDR10. Google services are missing, but there are some Huawei-own apps for this.

The Huawei P40 Pro costs 999 euro in the 8GB+256GB version, the P40 with 8GB+128GB costs 799 euro, and will be delivered from April 8th.
