Initially launched exclusively for the Chinese market, Huawei has unveiled its new Pura 80 smartphone generation. As reported by The Verge, the top-tier Pura 80 Ultra introduces an intriguing camera innovation: two telephoto modules share the same image sensor. In other words, the same image sensor is accessed via two different entrance lenses, resulting in two different focal lengths.
This is achieved by shifting a prism to redirect light rays from two positions – it's a periscope construction. The principle is best explained by the following illustration:
This enables a zoom factor of 3.7x to 9.4x. However, this results in a decrease in both light gathering (from f/2.4 to f/3.6) and resolution (from 50MP to 12.5MP). It is unclear whether this is due to an additional sensor crop or pixel binning. The sensor used is said to be a 1/1.28" type, which is relatively large for telephoto modules. This sensor also appears to be movably mounted, i.e., stabilized.
In addition to its dual periscope telephoto lens, the Pura 80 Ultra features a 50MP main camera with a 1" sensor and a 40MP ultra-wide-angle camera.
When the Pura 80 Ultra will be available in Germany is still uncertain; however, since the Pura 70 is offered here, it should only be a matter of time.
