The question between shotgun and pencil mics becomes interesting if one is to limit oneself to 1 microphone for outside and inside shoots. We would go by where you shoot more often: If you shoot more outside, we would tend to go for the shotgun - if you shoot more inside, one of the pencil mics used here might make more sense. Curtis would choose the Sennheiser MKH 50 if he could only choose 1 microphone. Two short notes from us in this context: If you want to use the Sennheiser MKH 50 outdoors as well, you should definitely take care of a good windscreen. And if you mainly want to shoot interviews in noisy environments, lavaliers might be even better than the two types of microphones mentioned so far ...
