When many DSLMs were unexpectedly sold in April – 36% more than in the same month last year – the question arose whether a trend reversal in the camera market was possible. We wanted to clarify with a look at the latest CIPA sales figures whether the trend has held over the past few months or if it was merely an outlier – and we discovered another striking jump in the statistics. This time, however, a completely different camera category catches the eye; one that was practically declared dead. ![]() Because while the interchangeable-lens camera market generally looked positive in the first half of the year, its curve has flattened again since July, even showing a very poor figure in August. ![]() In October, sales were just unchanged compared to 2024. And yet, according to CIPA figures, a record number of digital cameras were sold worldwide in October, exceeding 1 million units in a single month for the first time in several years. As far as we could reconstruct, this last happened five years ago, in ![]() If the interchangeable-lens camera market is stable at best right now, there can only be one explanation for the overall growth: compact cameras. Indeed, a clear increase can be seen in this category over the entire year, with a rather steep jump upwards precisely in October. Well over 288,000 digital cameras with a fixed lens were shipped, which is almost a doubling in two years (it was about 155,000 in Oct. 2023). ![]() In terms of pure unit numbers, compact and bridge cameras naturally cannot keep up with DSLMs; their share of total sales is just under one-third. Since these cameras are usually also cheaper than DSLMs, which are increasingly aimed at premium users, they generate relatively less revenue. However, considering that "simple" digital cameras had practically disappeared from the streets for many years while people were constantly taking photos and videos with their smartphones, the development is remarkable. One occasionally sees younger generations holding a point-and-shoot again, and the retro trend is observable in many areas. deutsche Version dieser Seite: Kompaktkameras wieder im Trend - trotz Smartphones |
