Insta360 also focuses on modularity in its new action cam and even goes further than GoPro. While the Hero 8 can be extended with interfaces and accessories via plug-in modules, the ONE R can actually be plugged in different optic/sensor combinations. Thus, the camera films either in the classic wide-angle or 360°.
Three such lens modules are now available for the launch: a dual lens for 360-degree shots, a "1-inch wide-angle lens" developed together with Leica that offers video recording at up to 5312x2988@30fps, and a "4K wide-angle lens". Insta360 does not reveal the size of the sensor built into this module. One of the results is an aerial module that is compatible with drones -- a 180° module is mounted on and under each drone and the 360° video image is then assembled. There will also be accessory mods à la GoPro, including a more powerful battery.
With the 1-inch wide-angle mod, the 35mm equivalent focal length is 14.4mm and the aperture is F3.2, the "4K wide-angle mod", which can film with max. 4000x3000@30fps (60p in 4K, 100fps in 2.7K), has a F2.8 and a 16.4mm focal length (converted).
A special low-light video mode is supposed to automatically reduce the image noise without letting too many details disappear. Unfortunately, all modules only film with a maximum of 100Mbps, but offer all kinds of Insta360-typical, partly AI-based added value, such as FlowState stabilization via 6-axis gyro data. When filming in 360°, a classic image section can be played out afterwards using the auto-frame function, an object can be kept in the picture using the "deep-track" function, even if it is temporarily hidden, or a selfie stick can be retouched from the pictures for a seemingly lying camera.
The ONE R is IPX8 certified and waterproof to a depth of 5 meters; if you want to go further underwater, you need the optional dive case (it tolerates depths of up to 60 meters). A USB type C connector and a top-mounted accessory shoe are provided and support the connection of a third-party 3.5 mm microphone. Two small two onboard microphones are provided on each module. The camera can also be controlled by voice commands.
The Insta360 ONE R Twin Edition combines the dual-lens 360 mod and the 4K wide-angle mod in one package for 509.99 Euro; the Insta360 ONE R 1-inch edition comes with the premium 1-inch wide-angle mod for 599.99 Euro; the Insta360 ONE R 4K Edition with the 4K wide-angle mod is available for 339.99 Euro.
