The new Insta360 X4, 360° camera and action camera in one, brings several improvements over the X3, such as higher resolutions and frame rates as well as an interchangeable lens cover. The camera now offers surround recording in 8K at 30 fps, while 60 fps is now supported in 5.7K. Slow motion at 100 fps is now possible in 4K (previously 3K). The maximum video bit rate is 200 Mbit/s.
Insta360 X4 360 action camera
In single-lens mode, which can be used to create "classic" wide-angle action shots, videos can be filmed in 4K at 60fps; when MaxView is activated (i.e. a 170° viewing angle), 4K 30fps videos are recorded (previously only 2.7K).
Of course, the Insta360 X4 also supports the invisible "selfie stick" effect. In selfie mode, where the camera automatically holds the subject in the frame, 4K 30fps or 2.7K 120fps are now supported instead of 1080p with the X3. (These clips taken in this mode no longer need to be edited afterwards to determine the image section).
The two built-in camera modules do not appear to have changed, the sensor size is 1/2" and the aperture is specified as F1.9. However, an easy-to-attach lens protector is now included, and a version made of hardened, scratch-resistant protective glass is optionally available.
However, there are changes in several other areas. The Insta360 X4 (like the 8K-capable Insta360 Ace Pro) is equipped with a 5 nm AI chip and a more powerful 2290 mAh battery is also on board - one charge should now be enough for a runtime of 135 minutes. The touchscreen has become slightly larger at 2.5" and is equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass. With dimensions of 46 x 123.6 x 37.6 mm, the X4 is around 1 cm longer than its predecessor.
The X4 can be operated partly with voice commands or gesture control (e.g. start/stop recording). With Timed Capture, it is also possible to set a time at which the X4 automatically switches itself on, records and switches itself off again.
A new wind reduction function also appears to be included. Other features include a Motion ND effect for shots with cinematic motion blur, the ability to overlay data such as GPS, speed and performance from a Garmin device or Apple Watch in videos and a selection of interactive statistics dashboards (via the Insta360 app). Integrated AI noise reduction is now offered for photos.
There are also a few new features in post-processing. Two options have been improved for reframing in the Insta360 app. With Quick Edit (formerly Snap Wizard), you can simply move the phone or use the virtual joystick to align the camera. Automatic reframing can also be performed by Insta360's AI algorithms, which should now be even faster thanks to improved scene recognition. The Insta360 app also includes the Shot Lab, where content creators can find over 30 effects. Insta360 Studio was recently updated for desktop workflows.
Both the smartphone app and the desktop software can be used free of charge, no subscription is required.
In addition, Insta360 Reframe has just been released as a dedicated plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro. Content creators can now reframe 360° files recorded with the X4 directly in Premiere Pro.
The IPX8 waterproof Insta360 X4 is available now and costs 559.99 euros.
