There might be new competition for DJI: Photos are circulating on the internet of two drones that Insta360 is allegedly developing. Under the label "Project Antigravity" (presumably a working title), according to leaked images on photorumors.com/2025/07/20/leaked-insta360-drone-antigravity-pictures/, both a classic, small quadcopter and a kind of POV racing drone with shielded rotors are being worked on. ![]() Leaked Insta360 drones / Source: PhotoRumors
So far, there are no details about the drones, but there seem to be flight-ready prototypes already. One of the photos shows the quadcopter being read out or configured during test flights on a beach. ![]() Insta360 drone in field test / Source: PhotoRumors The authenticity of the images is difficult to judge, especially in the age of generative AI. Nevertheless, such a move by Insta360 would not be surprising, as the company is very active and went public in June. An expansion of the business field would make sense, and camera drones would fit well into the product portfolio, which already includes 360° cameras, action cams, and gimbal technology for stabilized camera flights. Allegedly, half of Insta360&s workforce works in research and development. With a worldwide market share of 70 to 80%, DJI has a quasi-monopoly among manufacturers of civilian drones. Anyone who wants to buy a camera drone for aerial shots usually opts for a DJI model, which is known for its proven quality. To become a market leader, the products must ultimately be good and reliable. When GoPro entered the drone business with the Karma in 2016, the project failed, among other things, due to repeated technical problems that deterred users. If Insta360 actually launches these drones and manages to take significant market share from DJI, this would increase diversity in the drone business. However, the problem of potential data outflows to China, which is security-relevant for all countries in which DJI drones fly, would remain, as Insta360 is based in Shenzhen and is subject to Chinese economic guidelines. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Bekommt DJI bald neue Drohnen-Konkurrenz? |
