Laowa: New distortion-free super wide-angle lenses for DJI drones

[17:47 Mon,13.May 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Unlike DJI&s popular consumer drones such as the Mavic or Mini, DJI&s professional drones can use interchangeable optics through their proprietary DL-Mount—aside from DJI&s own lenses, there is an ever-growing range of compatible lenses from other manufacturers designed to be particularly compact and lightweight. Venus Optics has now introduced two new professional super-wide-angle lenses specifically for DJI&s DL-Mount, the Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL and the Laowa 14mm f4 FF RL Zero-D, two rectilinear (RL) wide-angle lenses for mirrorless full-frame (FF) cameras with a wide field of view of 126° and 114° respectively—the 14mm model is even designed to show no distortion (Zero-D: Zero Distortion).

The goal of rectilinear optics is to reproduce straight lines in the image as straight lines, instead of making them appear curved, as is the case with fisheye or other highly curved lens designs with extreme wide angles.

The two new wide-angle lenses can be used—just like the previously released Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D—with their DL-Mount along with DJI&s professional Inspire 3 drone and its Zenmuse X9-8K Air Gimbal full-frame camera, but also with DJI&s Ronin 4D gimbal camera.

Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL
The Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL by Venus Optics is a 6.3 cm long and 254 g heavy rectilinear wide-angle lens for full-frame (FF) mirrorless cameras with a field of view of 126° and a minimum focusing distance of 19 cm. It contains 2 aspherical elements and 3 elements with especially low dispersion to ensure sharpness, suppress chromatic aberrations, and minimize distortion. A 62-mm filter can be directly attached to the lens. Focusing and aperture setting are manual.

Laowa 14mm f4 FF RL Zero-D
The Laowa 14mm f4 FF RL Zero-D is 5.9 cm long, weighs 228g, and offers a slightly smaller angle of view of 114°, with "near zero" lens distortion according to Venus Optics. The sturdy metal housing accommodates 13 lenses in 10 groups to maximize sharpness and minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions. The short minimum focusing distance of 27 cm allows for sharp wide-angle shots close up. Thanks to the 5 aperture blades, a 10-ray starburst effect is produced when shooting against the sun or a point light source.

Both the Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL with DL-Mount costs 749 Euros, and the Laowa 14mm f4 FF RL Zero-D DL-Mount 549 Euros—both are already available with other lens mounts, such as Leica M, Leica L, Sony FE, Nikon Z, Panasonic L, and Canon RF-Mount. The DL-Mount version, unlike other models, is sold without a lens hood.
