The recently launched Sigma 200mm F2 DG OS is facing more affordable competition from China in the form of the Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF, which also boasts a fast f/2 aperture. However, its optical construction, featuring 11 elements in 9 groups, is simpler. According to the manufacturer, chromatic aberrations are nevertheless said to be minimized.

Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF
The Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF is offered for Sony E, Nikon Z, and the older Canon EF-mount (as the RF-mount is not open to third-party full-frame autofocus lenses). The EF version weighs 1588 grams, while the other two weigh approximately 200g more.
A minimum focusing distance of 150 cm allows users to get quite close to a subject. In addition to a focus mode switch, a focus limiter is implemented, which optionally restricts autofocus operation to distances from 5 meters to infinity. VenusLens provides no information regarding the autofocus noise. (Incidentally, the Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF is said to reach its limits during continuous shooting at 15 frames per second with Sony cameras and continuous autofocus (AF-C).)
A frequently used function – such as ISO, white balance, autofocus mode, or shooting mode – can be assigned to the FN button.
Optical image stabilization does not appear to be present. However, the versions for Sony E and Nikon Z feature an integrated 43mm rear filter holder for the use of ND filters, among others. The filter thickness must be less than 1.5mm, and the manufacturer recommends always equipping this slot with at least a clear glass filter to ensure optical performance is not impaired.
The Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF also supports 105mm front filters. It measures 118mm in diameter with a compact length ranging from 148.3mm to 176.8mm, depending on the mount. The orientation of the included lens collar with an Arca-Swiss mount can be adjusted via a rotary knob, for instance, to quickly rotate the camera by 90°.
The Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF costs 1,799 for the EF version and 1,999 for Sony E / Nikon Z. Shipments are scheduled to begin in November.
