The steady stream of cine lenses from Asia does not seem to dry up. With the compact cine zoom series Ranger, aimed primarily at beginners and owner-operators, the Chinese manufacturer Venus Optics presents new full-frame cine zooms under the Laowa brand, which offer some interesting features.
The new Ranger zooms are designed to be parfocal and have minimal focus breathing. Weighing only 1.4kg, the Laowa cine zooms can be considered real lightweights. For comparison: the official Zeiss Cinema Zoom 70-200mm T2.9 weighs 2.8kg. High-end cine zooms from Canon or Angenieux are considerably heavier. ;) Accordingly, it is not surprising that Laowa has a special focus on mobile setups such as gimbals, car rigs, shoulder rigs or even "handheld". What we find exciting about the Ranger zooms from Laowa is the integrated back-focus adjustment, which, according to Venus Optics, eliminates the need for shims for fine adjustment of the flange focal length. We also find it remarkable that the scope of delivery of the Ranger Cine Zooms includes a user-exchangeable EF mount in addition to the standard PL mount. The exchange of the mounts is very similar in workflow to the exchange of mounts with Zeiss Cps. In addition, interchangeable mounts for Canon RF, Sony E, Nikon Z and L Mount are also offered. ;) Laowa specifies a focus rotation angle of 270° and a zoom rotation angle of 100°. The outer diameter of the Ranger Zooms is 80mm - a 77mm thread is available for screw filters.
