If you are looking for an introduction to lens flares, you might find what you are looking for in this newly published and confidently titled article by Petapixel, "Lens Flare in Photography: A Complete Guide". If you want to delve deeper into the subject of lens flares and have always wanted to know which optical parameters are important for the calculation of digital lens flares, you will find a lot of background information in  this comprehensive paper by the Max Planck Institute with the nice title "Physically-Based Real-Time Lens Flare Rendering". Personally, we find the question of how important lens flares should be as a stylistic device in film production more exciting.
