Yes, even the cutting veteran Lightworks is still being further developed and at the turn of the year it has another new function. With Lightworks 2023, the user interface of the programme can be adapted to individual needs and saved as layout templates. Elements important for one&s own workflow can now be activated or deactivated in the control panels by clicking on the "+" symbol. The tabs at the top of the fixed layout can now also be organised freely. Areas that belong together can be grouped together.
Another relevant innovation is the integration of HDR workflows. Lightworks can now recognise HDR formats in media files (MOV, MXF and MP4) and provide the embedded (meta) information about the HDR colour space (including bit depth) in bins and in the metadata window. Lightworks Pro users can now change the playback colour space for a sequence and the colour space option in the export window. The sequence timeline also allows mixed HDR/SDR formats.
Another interesting update is video masks. Users can now draw and create such masks, including ellipse, square or complex shapes, and apply them to different effect categories. In addition, Lightworks 2023 has added an indoor/outdoor colour correction effect that allows separate adjustments for the mask and the outdoor area. This is useful for secondary colour corrections, among other things.
Lightworks 2023 features eight new keyboard shortcuts for adding favourite effects and faster forward and rewind options. The Import panel has also been improved and now offers the ability to import OpenEXR media and animated GIFs.
Finally, the Export panel has received several improvements, including the ability to optimise for streaming and include a custom thumbnail.
Lightworks is still available in a free version, but this allows a maximum export of 720p resolutions. 4K export is available from .99 per month, but you don&t get the full scope of the programme until .99/month, or .99 per year. For not much more money (.99), you get a lifetime licence, but this is not eligible for updates to future versions.
After Lightworks has already had a very eventful past and has been used in some Hollywood projects (Pulp Fiction, The King&s Speech, The Wolf of Wallstreet or The Irishman), it is not easy for the programme to keep up with the development of functional heavyweights such as DaVinci Resolve. But those who like the way Lightworks works don&t seem to consider any other programme. The free version should be enough to get a feel for the workflow. Corresponding tutorials can also be found on the website.
