We had already speculated (here on slashCam) about an upcoming Leica M without a rangefinder system – now it&s here: The Leica M EV1 with an electronic viewfinder system. And as we had surmised, looking at the specifications, the new Leica M EVF appears to be a similar viewfinder to the one found in the Leica Q3 – however, with a couple of minor deviations. ![]() The viewfinder resolution of the new Leica M EV1, with its 5,760,000 pixels, exactly matches the Leica Q3 viewfinder. However, the EV1 viewfinder seems to operate at a slightly lower frame rate. Leica specifies 60 fps here (Leica Q3 EVF = 120 fps). There are also slight differences in viewfinder magnification. Thus, the new Leica M EV1 viewfinder, with a 0.76x magnification, has a slightly lower magnification than the Q3 viewfinder (0.79x). SensorIn terms of sensor technology, the new Leica M EV1 features the same components as found in the current Leica M11 series: namely, the well-known high-resolution 60.3 MP BSI CMOS sensor with a pixel pitch of 3.76 µm at 9528 x 6328 pixels. However, there are at least two "significant" differences compared to the Leica M11: these lie in the weight and price of the new Leica M EV1. LightweightDue to the elimination of the mechanically quite complex rangefinder system, the weight of the new Leica M decreases from the previous 530 g (M11 incl. battery) to now 495 g (M EV1). ![]() A weight saving that should certainly be noticeable during handling. Whether this new lightness is an advantage for a camera system that is potentially better suited for longer (heavier) focal lengths remains to be seen. What, however, is likely to meet with general approval is the (at least somewhat) reduced price of the Leica M EV1, which, with an RRP of 7,950 Euros, is almost 1,000 Euros below the Leica M11. No Video RecordingAnd as with the M11, Leica also foregoes a video function with the M EV1. ![]() So, anyone looking for a Leica M-feeling when recording video must stick to the Q3 in the current Leica portfolio, which, with its fixed Summilux 1:1.7/28 mm ASPH optic, tiltable display, autofocus, and EVF, brings (somewhat) more video-relevant ingredients. Price and AvailabilityThe Leica M EV1 will be available from October 23, 2025, worldwide in Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and from authorized dealers. The recommended retail price is 7,950.00 Euros including VAT. deutsche Version dieser Seite: Leica M EV1: Leica M mit elektronischem Sucher zu einem niedrigeren Preis vorgestellt |
