Mac Studio now with M3 Ultra and M4 Max – Available soon

Apple today announced new Mac Studio models, powered by two different processor generations in this generation. The most powerful model now comes with a new M3 Ultra chip, which technically doesn&t differ significantly from its M2 Ultra predecessor.

It retains approximately 800 GB/s of Ultrafast memory bandwidth, but now 512 GB instead of 192 GB can be configured. The maximum 80 GPU cores still deliver "only" FP32 performance in the range of 33 TFlops, while Nvidia currently provides more than three times that with an RTX 5090 GPU. However, a Mac Ultra with its maximum 512 GB of memory is suitable for significantly larger AI models. The smallest basic configuration starts at €5,000; the maximum configuration with 512 GB RAM, 80-core GPU, and 16 TB SSD storage reaches a record-breaking €17,624.

Cheaper and perhaps significantly more interesting for many video users is the smaller Studio version, now based on an M4 Max, already known from the largest, current

MacBook Pro models. Now also available as a desktop device, it delivers 410 GB/s memory bandwidth with a 32-core GPU, 36 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD storage in the basic configuration for €2500. For an additional €625 (total €3124), the computer can be upgraded to a 40-core GPU and 48 GB RAM, increasing the memory bandwidth to 546 GB/s. This upgrade for a 25 percent surcharge should also provide approximately 25 percent more performance in video applications.

The new Mac Studio models come with Thunderbolt 5 ports, now offering transfer speeds of up to 120 Gbit/s. The M3 Ultra in the Mac Studio now supports up to eight XDR Pro displays at full 6K resolution. There&s also a 10 Gbit Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and an SDXC card slot on the front.
Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3 are also included.
