Magic Lantern - RAW filming with old Canon EOS cameras - soon with realtime previews

[15:20 Mon,3.April 2023   by Rudi Schmidts]

This year Magic Lantern has allowed itself no less than three April Fool's jokes. However, those who have been following the project for a while have often experienced that these April Fool's jokes often turned out to be true a short time later - although they simply sounded unbelievable on the first of April. A few years ago, for example, a used EOS M camera for just 150 euros was suddenly able to record 2.5K, 3K as well as anamorphic 4K in RAW, which led us in 2019 to take another closer look at the whole Magic Lantern project.

Our final impression at the time was, on the one hand, that the achievable RAW image quality of the EOS-M is phenomenal compared to the price. On the other hand, the biggest problem remained that you couldn't see a reliable preview on the camera display while filming. There was only a jerky black-and-white preview appearance, which often didn't even show the actual film clip. This made the "Rebel solution" hardly practical in our eyes. And despite many hacking attempts, no Magic Lantern member managed to implement a "normal" preview until today.

That's another reason why we were extremely skeptical about this year's April Fool's Day announcement. Namely, that a forum member named theBilalFakhouri has now succeeded in showing a working preview on the display when RAW FIlming with the EOS M. Smoothly and in real time with full display resolution. And as so often in the past, there really seems to be something to this report.

We write "seems" because the programmer has not yet released his hack for general review. However, the very renowned Magic Lantern member "Danne" had access to the patch and confirmed back on April 2 that the preview does indeed work.

However, theBilalFakhouri doesn't seem to want to make his work available to the general public completely free of charge because, according to him, he spent hundreds of hours hacking experiments to get the RAW preview to work. This is now said to reliably cope with a great many interesting RAW modes - even the anamorphic interpretations:

His firmware modification, aptly named "Crop Mood - WYSIWYG", is supposed to work with the 100D, 650D, 700D as well as the EOS M when released - by the way, all models that now have at least a decade under their belt. We are therefore very curious to see what price theBilalFakhouri has in mind to breathe fresh RAW life into these quasi-antique camera models once again.

And that's not even all. If you have some time, you can check out the following thread for the current status of important Magic Lantern projects.
