More RAW video for DIGIC 5 cameras - Magic Lantern overclocks SD interface

Whenever you think you&ve finally reached the end of the line, Magic Lantern goes one better. So it is now possible to overclock the SD card interface of many models with DIGIC 5 processor (e.g. 5D-Mark III, EOS M and 700D). What doesn&t sound particularly sensational at first glance, however, is quite remarkable on many models with DIGIC 5 processors due to the increased data rates.

Since these cameras also know compressed RAW (lossless) with lower data and bit rates, RAW formats with cinemascope FullHD resolution and even 2.5K are now possible on models with an SD card slot. For example, user Tony Weller reports that with his 700D, thanks to this trick, he can now record in 12 bit losless with 2520 x 1072 resolution at a data rate of 58MB/s without a time limit. Up to now, the maximum data rate of Canon SD card interfaces with DIGIC 5 processor has been around 40 MB/s.

With the current Magic Lantern DIGIC 5 "Flagship" 5D Mark III, which has two slots (1 x CF, 1x SD), real 4K resolutions could become possible in Cinemasope for the first time by splitting the recording onto two cards. Up to now, only slightly more than 3K are on a CF card under optimal conditions. Even interesting modes with 50 and 60 fps should suddenly no longer be utopian.

A few days of maturing time should probably not be necessary, but at the latest then every Magic Lantern user should itch to try out the new modes. Of course, with the usual residual risk that the camera might explode at some point.
