Camera accessory maker Zacuto and Chinese manufacturer Accsoon, known for its wireless video links, have teamed up to unveil the first iPhone Viewfinder solution at NAB.
Zacuto contributes a Z-Finder system adapted for the iPhone while Accsoon provides its SeeMo know-how including viewfinder/streaming software. Here is the promotion video for the already known Accsoon SeeMo:
In order to be able to call different Viewfinder functions on the iPhone with the Z-Finder mounted, a touch control panel on the iPhone has been cut out by the Z-Finder. Functions such as peaking, waveform, grid lines etc. should then be able to be activated here.
However, using smartphones as external monitors is nothing really new anymore. The most integrated solution is probably Sony&s flagship Xperia smartphones, which are directly connected to the Sony Alpha camera via USB-C - without an adapter solution in between. (If you look at the Zacuto-Accsoon solution in the currently available pictures, it also seems to be a rather slim solution ...).
Accordingly, the Zacuto Smart Z-Finder available as of this month covers not only iPhones but also Sony Xperia and Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The complete (and quite long) list of compatible smartphones can be found here at Zacuto.
A price for the combined solution of Zacuto Z-Finder and Acsson is not available, the Zacuto Smart Z-Finder is priced at .
The question remains whether you really want to use your cell phone as a monitor on site. In any case, we still have a few questions regarding handling/operability and accessibility on the set. On the other hand, a high-quality viewfinder system could be available here, purely from the technical resolution, and a second cell phone would perhaps be worthwhile for this.
We will definitely take a look at the new Zacuto-Accsoon smartphone viewfinder system at NAB and report on our first impressions ...
