Netflix - better keying with magenta green screen?

A research team from Netflix has presented a new green screen technique in a Arxiv paper that is said to achieve better results with conventional cameras than classic chroma keying methods.

The Magenta GreenScreen (MGS) technique, unlike conventional keying methods, however, requires special lighting. The background is still illuminated by bright green LEDs. The objects in the foreground, however, are additionally illuminated with red and blue LEDs, resulting in a magenta glow.

The

linked Heise article explains rather woolly that the DIfference signals can ultimately be keyed better by contrasting them with special AI tools. However, the paper goes much further and talks about stroboscopic lighting at 144 Hz with 24 fps recording. In this case, foreground and background are exchanged in color with high frequency. (Spectrally Multiplexed Alpha Matting).

Better keying with magenta green screen?

This can lead to fringing effects during fast movements. In our opinion, such a setup would also have to be reliably synchronized with the camera&s shutter, but we found nothing in the paper about this possible setup problem. In any case, the magenta overlay must also be removed from the image in post.

To our eyes, the whole thing seems rather laborious to produce a clean alpha channel, but who knows? Maybe the result compensates for the effort. However, if special AI tools are used in post anyway, one wonders whether they might not be able to achieve equally good results with classic illumination in the meantime. After all, there has been enormous progress in AI keying in recent months here, too.
