Netflix has published - unfortunately only for the USA - which movies and series were most often watched in 2019. The most popular show was the comedy "Murder Mystery" starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, the most popular series was the third season of "Stranger Things" and the top non-fiction series was the clean-up helper "Tidying Up With Marie Kondo". However, it wasn&t how many times a film/series was watched in total that was counted, but rather the number of households that streamed it for at least two minutes within the first 28 days of a release was decisive for its popularity. So how many viewers stayed through the full 3 1/2 hours of Scorsese&s "The Irishman" is not evident from these figures.
In order to give recently released movies/series, such as the game version of "The Witcher" or Michael Bay&s "6 Underground" a chance, Netflix calculated a projection of their popularity for 28 days - which can also be wrong if a series/film is not watched as often as expected. Until now, Netflix has been extremely reluctant to release information about its viewers and their preferences, probably to avoid giving the competition valuable data.
The Number One: Murder Mystery
You won&t find absolute viewer numbers - but for the classification of the proportions, an information from a tweet of Netflix in June is used, that "Murder Mystery" was accessed more than 30 million times worldwide at the start weekend. Interesting is the fact that Netflix&s own productions or exclusive purchases dominate all Top Tens (as the only non-Netflix Original Disney animation "The Incredibles 2" is represented in the overall Top Ten) and movies were more successful than series of which only three are represented in the Top Ten. However, there is no confirmation of the correctness of the numbers by an independent institution.
