New Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 19 brings over 100 new features

As Blackmagic Design has released a new major version of its free grading, editing, compositing, and audio mastering program DaVinci Resolve (Studio), alongside new cameras such as the URSA Cine 12K and other hardware. Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 19 is a major update that brings several new AI features and over 100 new professional features including IntelliTrack AI, Ultra NR noise reduction, Ambisonics support, ColorSlice six-vector grading, a proprietary Film Look Creator, multi-source editing, and new MultiPoly rotoscoping tools.

The new features enable, for example, direct editing of clips using transcribed audio (including the detection of different speakers), the creation of new film looks by mimicking photometric film processes, or automatic audio panning through motion detection. Below are some of the key updates.

Transcription Workflow Improvements

To better edit videos directly on the timeline based on their transcribed text, the transcription workflow for editors has been enhanced. The analyze function can now recognize multiple voices and assign names to different speakers. Additionally, the text-based search and replace features have been refined.

Real-Time Selection of Live Camera Feeds

The Cut Page now supports real-time selection of live camera feeds, which can be put on air as instant replays in slow motion or with stingers. In the new multi-source viewer, users can display all their live camera feeds or clips that share the same timecode on a single multiview screen. Shots can be reviewed, played back, or selected for import into the timeline or live broadcast. Users can also switch live between all available perspectives. POI markers allow for immediate marking of interesting spots when viewing live camera feeds or clips in the multiview.

AI-Powered Noise Reduction

The DaVinci Neural Engine is used for the new UltraNR noise reduction mode, which drastically reduces digital noise in an image without compromising clarity. For even more effective noise reduction in highly dynamic shots, this mode can be combined with temporal noise reduction.

Film Look Creator

The new Film Look Creator allows users to create cinematic looks that replicate analog film properties such as halation, overexposure effects, film grain, flickering, gate weave effects, and vignetting. Users can adjust exposure in steps and use subtractive saturation, saturation, and split-tone controls to achieve looks that are typically seen only in cinemas.

ColorSlice Palette with Six-Vector Grading

The new ColorSlice palette with six-vector grading relies on subtractive color processes to adjust color density, saturation, and tones in the image, allowing users to create rich, cinematic colors and looks. With the parameters of the customizable vector slicers, colorists can refine and intensify colors to produce natural looks without color spill.

MultiPoly Tool

The new MultiPoly Tool displays all masks in a clear list, saving the need to switch between nodes and thus enabling faster and more precise rotoscoping. It is particularly suitable for complex projects, as users can view, select, add, and modify specific shapes, as well as toggle their visibility and adjust parameters.

IntelliTrack AI

Another new AI feature is IntelliTrack AI, which produces precise automatic audio panning in Fairlight by tracking people or objects as they move through 2D and 3D spaces. With AI audio panning to video, post-production can switch between the positions of multiple actors in a scene to mix them as desired. The AI-powered Dialogue Separator FX can mix voice, background, and ambience separately in post-production, reducing or even removing unwanted noises, such as for outdoor shoots and interviews in busy locations.

Ducker Track and Music Remixer Track FX

The new Ducker Track FX allows for the automatic leveling of one audio track based on the level of another. Users can automatically lower the volume of music or background noise when dialogue is present and then fine-tune the audio mix with advanced controls. With the Music Remixer Track FX, the music track can be mixed in detail, including muting and adjusting levels for voice, drums, bass, guitar, and more, allowing for the conversion of a song with vocals into an instrumental piece.

Installation Note

It&s important to note from Blackmagic before installing Resolve 19: "For DaVinci Resolve 19.0, we have endeavored to keep project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 18.6.6. While you can access the project library with 18.6.6, individual projects created or opened in 19.0 will not be accessible in 18.6.6. We recommend making a full backup of the project library and individual projects before opening projects in 19.0."
