Sony has announced a welcome model update for its two CFexpress Type A TOUGH memory cards, which more than doubles their read and write speeds. The new 960 GB and 1920 GB CFexpress 4.0 Type A TOUGH cards now achieve a peak read speed of up to 1,800 MB/s and a write speed of up to 1,700 MB/s, while the previous models (www.sony.de/store/product/ceam1920t.ce7/CFexpress-Typ-A-Speicherkarte-der-CEA-M-Serie) topped out at 800 MB/s and 700 MB/s, respectively. In addition, Sony has introduced the MRW-G3, a matching CFexpress 4.0 card reader that takes advantage of the cards& new maximum speeds.

Thanks to their robust construction according to the TOUGH specification, they offer, according to Sony, five times higher drop resistance and ten times higher bending resistance than the CFexpress Type A standard, as well as protection against dust, water (IP57), X-rays, UV radiation and electrostatic discharge. ![]() Sony CFexpress Typ A Tough 1700 MB/s CFexpress for High Data Rate RecordingsSony cameras such as the full-frame mirrorless Sony Alpha 7S III, Sony Alpha 7 IV, Sony Alpha 7R V and Sony Alpha 9 III, as well as the Cinema Line camcorders Sony FX2, FX3 and Sony FX30, support recording to both SDXC and CFexpress Type A cards via their dual slots. For some recording modes with high data rates, these cameras explicitly require CFexpress cards as the medium instead of the otherwise compatible SDXC memory cards, as only these have the necessary data throughput - here is Sony&s guide: www.sony.de/electronics/support/articles/00252738. ![]() Recording modes that require CFexpress However, Sony cameras only support CFexpress memory cards with the now outdated 2.0 standard, which limits the maximum speed to 1 GB/s. Since the new CFexpress 4.0 cards are backward compatible, they can also be used in the cameras mentioned, but the increased speed is only utilized when reading out on the computer using a CFexpress 4.0 compatible card reader such as the new Sony MRW-G3 or future Sony cameras with support for CFexpress 4.0. ![]() Recording modes that require CFexpress Sony MRW-G3 Card ReaderThe new Sony MRW-G3 card reader enables data transfer from the new CFexpress 4.0 TOUGH cards via the USB-C port according to the USB4 standard (40 Gb/s) with their maximum read speed of 1,800 MB/s. It is cross-platform compatible from Windows and macOS computers to iOS, iPadOS and Android devices and comes with a USB-C cable. Prices and AvailabilityThe Sony CFexpress 4.0 Type A TOUGH (CEA-G960T) with a capacity of 960 GB costs 739 euros, the Sony CFexpress 4.0 Type A TOUGH (CEA-G1920T) with 1,920 GB of memory costs 1,199 euros and the Sony MRW-G3 card reader costs 179 euros all are expected to be available in stores from August, but are already available for pre-order.
